Basement water does not always come from the sanitary sewer. Walk through downspouts, grading, foundation drainage, sump equipment, floor drains and records as separate questions.
- Confirm downspouts discharge away from the foundation where appropriate.
- Check that sump equipment has a clear, safe discharge path.
- Look for damp areas, odour or staining and document them.
- Keep an emergency plan that does not depend on one device.
