What an installation assessment should establish
A site-specific assessment identifies the relevant building sewer, the proposed valve location, access, existing pipe condition and the work needed to expose and restore the area. A written scope should separate confirmed observations from assumptions that may change after opening the floor.
- Ask where the valve would sit and how it will remain accessible.
- Ask what opening, testing, restoration and cleanup are included.
- Keep the scope, invoice, inspection records and photographs with home documents.
Ottawa permit and inspection notes
The City of Ottawa says all new single, semi-detached, row-house and townhome dwelling units require backwater valves on sanitary service laterals. Its page also describes inspection expectations for new construction. That does not determine which permit or inspection applies to every retrofit; confirm the current requirements for the actual work.

- Keep approved plans available for inspections when the City requires them.
Before you book
Gather the home age, prior water events, renovation records and any safe photographs of visible access. A camera inspection may help answer a specific pipe-condition question, but it is not automatically necessary or a complete diagnosis.
