Walk the home in sections
Start with what you can safely observe. Separate sanitary, groundwater and surface-water questions so one symptom does not become an overconfident diagnosis.
- Record where water or odour appears.
- Note whether the issue follows rain, thaw or fixture use.
- Locate floor drains, cleanouts, sump equipment and access points.
- Take dated notes and photos for your own records.
